The Barren Yard

Do: Test the soil. Because the majority of city dirt contains a level of toxicity and you your friends, pets and kids should be safe! Learn more.

Do : Make a sketch of what elements you want, if you have the space think about a patio area for BBQ also consider having a nice place to sit.  Because you need a road map. Learn more.

Do: make a list of plants that will work in your light conditions because it’s the difference between life and death for plants. Learn more.

Do: Identify how you will water your garden because your plants need a good drink every few days. Learn more.

Do: Clear any debris, weed or grass out of the garden.  Because they will get in the way. If it’s interesting and matches your style leave it, it may make a cool element.

Do: add any landscaping elements like a patio or deck, because the installation could hurt your plants

Do: amend the soil by spreading 2-4 inches of compost and high quality soil over the existing dirt. because compost will give your soil the nutrients it needs. Learn more.

Do: use a grubber or spade to turn over and mix your soil, take out big rocks and some roots. Because this will put air in the soil and spread the amendments. Learn more.

Do: sculpt the soil so in heavy rain water will flow to a drainage point. Because no one wants a wet basement.

Do : Plant! Make sure you look at how big your plants will get so you can leave them plenty of room. Because you don’t want to have to pull out most of your plants after all that hard work.

Do: Spread 2-3 inches of mulch. Because mulching will keep your garden moist, block weeds, and improve your soil. Learn more.

The Established Yard

Do: Take a soil sample, to make sure you can work safely. Learn more.

DO: Take an inventory of what is growing. Because it will help you make good plans

Do: Make a sketch of what you want your yard to look like, make a list of plants that will work in your light conditions because everyone needs a guide! Learn More.

Do: Prune and cut back major trees and shrubs. Because you need some room to enjoy. Learn more.

Do: remove plants that aren’t working, give them to a friend and tell them they can find out what to do with them at Urban Garden Guide. Because gardening improves wellbeing

Onging Care

Do: Water. Newly planted gardens should be watered daily. The morning is the best time to water. Established gardens need water on very hot days, or twice a week. Because plants need water. Learn more.

Do: Weed. Pull out unwanted sproutlings. Because they will take the resources your plants need and make you garden ugly. If you have lots of weeds, pull them all out then add more mulch

Do:  Sprinkle an inch of compost over the top of soil use sparingly- see guide. Because plants need vitamins and minerals to grow strong

Do: Trim back or prune dead or overgrown plants. Because it will help your plants flourish

Do:  Monitor for sick or bug infested plants. Because it could spread!  Learn more.
